The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) firmly rejects the divisive campaigns led by the ReformINEC and SackYakubu movement. While freedom of expression is a constitutional right, the inflammatory rhetoric and baseless accusations from this movement threaten the integrity of our democratic institutions and risk destabilizing the progress Nigeria has made.
Under the leadership of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has introduced transformative measures, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and electronic result transmission. These innovations have bolstered electoral transparency and accountability, demonstrating that progress is being made. The narrative that INEC has failed irreparably is misleading and undermines the institution’s credibility.
Calls for Professor Yakubu’s removal are not only unfounded but also short-sighted. Such actions would erode public trust in INEC, disrupt electoral preparations, and open the door for undue interference. Strong democracies are built on the resilience of their institutions, not on sensational campaigns aimed at discrediting them.
The NDYC emphasizes that genuine reform must stem from constructive dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders, including the National Assembly, civil society, and citizens. Advocacy efforts must focus on strengthening democratic processes rather than tearing down structures that are integral to the nation’s progress.
At a time when Nigeria faces pressing challenges like insecurity and economic recovery, it is critical to prioritize national unity over divisive agendas. ReformINEC’s inflammatory rhetoric risks deepening political and ethnic divides, further jeopardizing Nigeria’s stability.
